Born in Thames, it was a childhood spent in Gisborne that shaped Reuben’s love for surfing. He completed a Bachelor of Media Arts, majoring in Graphics – although advertising was already in his blood long before that time.
Reuben grew up in the publishing industry, with his father starting the first daily newspaper in New Zealand, before founding NZ Geographic, NZ Adventure and NZ Skier magazine, and eventually moving to Rarotonga to run and own The Cook Islands News.
Upon graduating, Reuben spent time in both television and design studios in Auckland and Tauranga before he and his wife Melissa moved to the UK where he worked as a creative for some of the world’s leading advertising agencies, such as TBWA, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Cunning Stunts. Although he enjoyed working on high profile brands, New Zealand’s oceans were calling, so (after a mammoth surf expedition around the Pacific) he set about returning home and along with Melissa set out to establish a nationally-recognised creative agency.
In the future, Reuben hopes to spend more time surfing and travelling with his family, while continuing to grow WOODS – helping raise the level of design in the Bay of Plenty, and adding value to the businesses with which we work.
